Hurren was picked up by Nottingham Forest as a trainee in 2002. He played alongside the likes of James Perch and Matt Thornhill in the Nottingham Forest youth setup. He went on to remain with the club for six seasons, but failed to force his way into the first team and was released in 2005.
Following his release from Nottingham Forest, Gavin was picked up by Kidderminster Harriers for the 2005–06 season. In his first season he helped Harriers to a 15th place finish. He made 13 appearances, without scoring during the season, he also had a brief stint on loan with Bromsgrove Rovers.[1]
Hurren's second season with Kidderminster Harriers proved to be more productive, the loan spell with Bromsgrove Rovers had proved a success, and Gavin forced his way into the Harriers first team. He went onto make 39 appearances and found the net on three occasions, as the club improved on their previous season, with a 10th place finish.
Gavin went into the 2006–07 season, a firm fixture in the Kidderminster Harriers first team. He helped Harriers record a 13th place finish, making 34 appearances and scoring two goals.
He decided against signing a new deal with Harriers in the summer of 2008, instead joining Mansfield Town. His 2008-2009 campaign was a rocky one, as he only made ten appearances for the Stags before being released in January 2009. he ended the season playing for a number of sides in short spells, turning out for King's Lynn and Crawley Town
In June 2009, he returned to the Midlands to sign for Tamworth. He made only two appearances for the Lambs before joining AFC Telford on loan. After returning to the Lamb, he was sent to Blue Square Premier side Gateshead
The summer of 2010 saw Hurren make the move to Australia, turning out for Sunshine George Cross before returning to England for the 2010-2011 pre-season
After training with Worcester City, he moved to Halesowen Town, but problems obtaining International Clearance meant he missed out on a debut for the Yeltz. He was close to agreeing terms with Eastwood Town before Hednesford stepped in in October 2010
